Each year Rivendell provides a wide variety of retreats, for those completely new to meditation through to those who have committed their lives to Buddhist practice. Meditation and Buddhism can be practised by anybody, irrespective of race, gender, sexuality or cultural background. In response to the needs of particular groups, we offer some specific retreats. 
Rivendell lies in the rolling Sussex countryside, on the edge of Ashdown Forest. The house is set in beautiful spacious gardens, with ponds and woods. From here there are many lovely country walks. At its heart is a team of members of the Western Buddhist Order, some who live at Rivendell, others who do not, all of whom are committed to supporting and leading retreats as part of their spiritual practice. Other committed and experienced Buddhists join the Rivendell team to contribute their experience, and their specialist perspective and skills. 
Most of our retreats last either a weekend or a week, usually starting on a Friday. Rivendell provides ideal facilities: a quiet shrine-room, well-tended gardens and a welcoming house, with comfortable shared bedrooms. All meals are vegetarian. Retreats start with a light supper on the first evening at about 7 pm. Weekend, long-weekend and Opening Windows retreats usually finish around 4pm on the Sunday, and other retreats by noon on the last day.
